Question about non-Buddhist spouse

So, question about how to handle a situation. I am new to Buddhism and working through my own issues. My wife is not on my journey so I don’t know how react when somebody acts in an aggressive way to her.

My first instinct is to respond aggressively but I am trying to balance my need to protect her with my new found ideology
