is it a valid line of inquiry to draw a comparison between the teaching of the historic Buddha and that of Ekhart Tolle?

If we can assume for a moment both teachers experienced permanent ego loss and thus recovered their original nature or being, why could we not seek a deeper understanding of the Buddha's teaching by viewing it through the spectrum of Ekhart Tolle's insights? Are not such comparative studies something that is validly practiced in the social sciences? Perhaps this would bring us to a closer understanding of what the Buddha taught than texts thousands of years old and compiled long after the Buddha had already shed the mortal coil.
