Is eating meat forbidden in Buddhism?

Killing an animal to eat it for pleasure versus surviving a life or death situation.

I am a vegan and it is very important to me to help reduce the suffering that I inflict. Therefore I do not intentionally kill to survive. I do not eat meat or dairy products.

Is this a fundamental teaching in Buddhsim? If it is not, why not?
