Jack Keroauc’s Dharma Bums and old Buhddhist text

If anyone here has read Dharma Bums, what is the stuff Gary Snyder (Japhy Ryder) poors over and translates? Also, I am going rambling with my swag (Australian canvas sleeping bag) and would love it if I could get some recommendations for some ancient poems, haikus and general literature that will open my mind and is perfect for reading meditatively on the beach.
