Is it unethical to create creative-works that display unethical things?
As a creative person myself, I've found myself often contemplating this within a Buddhist/Karmic context. Such as, would it be bad karma for me to create a short film that focuses on bad guys doing bad things, even if in my life I live an entirely peaceful and benevolent existence? There are a lot of horror movies and other genres which glorify violence and other tragic things. Likewise there are a lot of forms of violent music such as rap and metal. Many of these content-creators are very charitable and kind people in real life, donating to charities, having foundations which help the youth, and so on.
On one token I could see some Buddhists claim it is bad Karma because "negative content" can influence and corrupt the decisions of people, potentially on a large scale. Whereas, on another token, some may claim that if the intent is pure/good, then no bad Karma can be generated in the individual who creates the content, if their goal is merely to create for entertainment purposes.
What are your thoughts on this?
