Can one in his/her lifetime reach Nirvana despite having unwholesome karma?

I heard a lecture which stated that there was once somebody who became an Arhat and due to his/her karma he/she got murdered in order to even out the cause and causation of the karma.

So what is the relation between buddhahood and karma?
