Buddhist eating turkey

I was at a party last night and sat watching a lady who claimed to be Buddhist eat turkey and talk about how it's ok to eat meat and be Buddhists. I kept my mouth closed because I didn't want to get into a fight. She said Buddhist monks sometimes eat meat so it's ok. Anyone care to explain this more? I find it hard to believe you can be Buddhist and eat food from the meat/dairy/eggs industry .
