5 Generations?

I'm not a practicing Buddhist but have recently become very interested after a trip to Thailand. I had a conversation with a local where he explained that Buddha has five generations and that we are currently on the fourth one. After some googling I am not able to find a anything referencing 5 generations or periods. I'm thinking it was a language barrier... does anybody know what he was referencing?
