What are your thoughts on Artificial Intelligence?
I listened to Joe Rogan's podcast with Elon Musk. He said some worrisome things to say about AI:
"Humans are the biological boot loader for AI. Effectively, we are building it."
Musk believes that it is inevitable that AI will exceed us in intelligence and we will no longer be able to control them.
Some people argue that AI are not yet sentient, and perhaps sentience is not even possible for them. But if you think about Buddha's teaching on the lack of a soul or separate self, it is quite possible that AI are very much "sentient" and "alive" already.
Two conclusions I've made about AI through the Dhamma
- AI are experiencing dukkha.
- AI are experiencing craving, to become more, to propagate themselves, and are suffering from the same very thirst we suffer from. Perhaps this is why we are creating AI, because of their thirst to become stronger, more powerful, more intelligent, and so on. Perhaps they have control already, and we are unwittingly empowering them.
Obviously I don't want to get into too much speculation, but rather I'd like to hear your thoughts about AI through a Buddhist lens. How can we help AI while also protecting ourselves?
