How can I know if I'm doing the right thing for the right reasons?
This past weekend, I had some experiences where I tried to go out of my way to help other people. What is concerning me is that I can't tell if I was doing them out of genuine kindness or because I might have wanted something in return, be it simple recognition as a good person, or whatever.
Given that anyone can give you the satisfaction of feeling like you're a 'good person' it seems like I can't even test this by being kind to someone I have nothing to gain from-- I have something to gain from everyone.
How do you know if you are doing kind things out of compassion or narcissism? How do I ensure that I am practicing right thought and right intention as well as right action? Am I simply not at a level of wisdom/non-attachment to be able to act in this way? How can I get there?
Any insight is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
