Why do some buddhist teachers behave unethically, even though they practiced buddhism for many years?
Same question as the one I just deleted, but without the mahayana-theravada contrast that was easy to misinterpret.
There have been quite a few buddhist teachers who were involved in scandals, generally revolving around sex or money. Many of these teachers practiced buddhism for many years, and yet they still behaved in ways that are decidedly unenlightened. Of course we shouldn't demand that all teachers are morally perfect arhats, but wouldn't practicing buddhism for a long time lead to growing insight, and wouldn't this insight lead teachers to abandon immoral behavior because of the dukkha it causes? Do teachers who behave immorally somehow not gain these insights and if so, why?
