Animal consciousness

Are there any a priori reasons to assume animals don't experience consciousness, at least on some level?

Meditating today and thought about how to talk to family that hunts about why I no longer hunt. It popped into my head that if human brains can create consciousness there is no reason to believe that animals can't. I know I will find more thoughts on this by googling, which I will do now, just curious about the communities thoughts.
